Protests over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Missouri turned from violence to celebration last night, after massed ranks of riot police were replaced by a small number of officers led by a newly appointed black captain.
In a tactical turnaround, Jay Nixon, the state governor, put Ron Johnson, a highway patrol captain, in charge of security in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson after almost a week of clashes between protesters and police.
